Los Angeles has one of the highest violent crime rates in the nation. The FBI reports that in 2010 there were an estimated 1,246,248 violent crimes nationwide, totaling 403.6 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
Violent crimes include the following (listed in descending order):
- Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter
- Forcible rape
- Robbery
- Aggravated assault
The following property crimes are also considered violent crimes:
- Burglary
- Larceny-theft
- Motor vehicle theft
The FBI reports that in 2010, the highest number of violent crimes involved aggravated assault, totally 62 percent. Next up is robbery which accounted for 29.5 percent; forcible rape which accounted for 6.8 percent; and murder which accounted for 1.2 percent of violent crimes in 2010.
The state of California has harsh penalties for violent crimes. If you are arrested and charged with a violent crime, you should exercise your right to remain silent.
