With life slowly getting back to normal after the COVID-19 pandemic, crime is also back in business. For 2021, California is showing a stunning increase in murder rates, with nearly a 30% rise this year. But perhaps some of the most publicized cases of the year involved robberies throughout the state.

California Burglars Smash & Grab at Exclusive LA Stores

In November, robbers “smashed and grabbed” their way through Los Angeles and San Francisco in one of the most brazen crime sprees to ever hit California. Dozens of people stole more than $380,000 in merchandise in eleven separate robberies in the LA area that also caused more than $40,000 in property damage. More than 100 robbers grabbed an estimated $125,000 in merchandise in similar robberies in the Bay Area. In one robbery in San Jose, five suspects walked into a mall jewelry store and smashed display cases, stuffing what they could in their pockets before fleeing the mall. Police reported that the robbery took less than 15 seconds.

California isn't alone in facing these crimes. In November, fourteen robbers barged into a Chicago Louis Vuitton store and stole more than $100,000 in merchandise. As of December, LA police have arrested 14 suspects in connection with the area smash and grab crimes, while San Francisco authorities announced felony charges against nine individuals.

California Robbers Target and Follow Victims for Crime Spree

In a scary turn, robbers in LA didn't stop at “browsing” on Rodeo Drive. Robbers have also been targeting people to rob them. One of these robberies included a BET host followed by thieves. Another involved a star from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” reality TV show who faced a home invasion while home with her two children.
